Explore the South Hams

The South Hams in South Devon is a registered Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From the hill-walkers paradise of Dartmoor to the North; through to the world-class seaside sailing and boating town of Salcombe to the South; there is something for everyone.

Kids

When the suns out, there are few places better to visit than the ribbon of beautiful beaches that line our coastline (see below). For “guaranteed fun, rain or shine” there is Woodlands Theme Park, which is always a fun way to spend a day! If you fancy some adventure, there is a Dart Rock Indoor Climbing Centre nearby; as well as the River Dart Country Park which both offer a range of kid-centric activities in any weather. Dittiscombe Equestrian Centre can cater perfectly for kids lessons, and Waterborn stand-up paddle boarding school in Kingsbridge is a great place to learn to stand-up paddle board while on your holiday.

Beaches & Boats

The closest, Slapton Sands is about 10 minutes away, and boasts a range of Cafés, Pubs as well as a rich history to explore. On windier days, head south to the beaches of Salcombe and East Portlemouth to bask in the best of the English Sun. For surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing & body-boarding head to Bantham beach, about 25 minutes away. There is also the fantastic Discovery Surf School in Bigbury, if you’d like to try something new or develop your Surf skills. If you’d like to hire a motorboat, then we’d recommend Whitestrand Boat Hire in Salcombe: they are open most of the year and provide lifejackets and tuition to give customers the opportunity to explore the creeks and beaches of the Salcombe-Kingsbridge Estuary.

Walking

There is an extensive range of walking routes all around Cross Farmhouse. From short post-lunch strolls through to full-day treks, we can recommend a wide range dotted all over the local area.

Within a 15-minute drive East, you can walk along the national treasure that is the South West Coast Path, or in a 30-minute drive North you can visit Dartmoor National Park. There is also a range of beautiful short walks that can be found here.

Dartmoor

Pubs

We are lucky enough to live a 20-minute walk to the lovely Fortescue Arms in East Allington who offer a wide range of Beers & Ales. Another local pub is the Queens Arms at Slapton, who offer a wide variety of lovely home-cooked lunches and evening meals. If you are looking for seafood, we’d recommend the Start Bay Inn in Slapton for a great range of fresh fish. We are also close to Kingsbridge, home to the Crabshell Inn which serves food all day, and overlooks the water.

Horse Riding

Cross Farmhouse is home to 4 horses & ponies, which live in one of our 4 paddocks. We have availability in our stables and paddocks for visiting ponies, as well as ample, complementary parking for horseboxes & trailers, so if you’d like to bring your horse on holiday, then we can arrange that for you! Cost is dependent on the level of service that you would require. As reference, the most basic service is paddock & hay for £25.

If you’d like to try out horse riding, Dittiscombe Equestrian Centre offers lessons and sessions for any level of rider. They’ve been teaching our family for years, and come very highly recommended.
